The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana received funding from the Jewel-Osco Foundation ($87,000), Franciscan Alliance ($10,000), Walmart Foundation through Feeding America ($35,000), Legacy Foundation ($15,000), and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration ($35,785.20) to address hunger across Lake & Porter Counties through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) education and outreach. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana announced today that it will commit $661,000 over the next three years to Community Harvest Food Bank, Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank, and Hoosier Hills Food Bank. This funding will help the food banks expand their ability to deliver healthy food to Hoosiers and host additional mobile food distribution events. Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. recently announced a $1 million contribution, through the Cleveland-Cliffs Foundation, to 44 food banks throughout the United States, providing up to 10 million meals. The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is one of the beneficiaries receiving $250,000. In December 2020, Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. acquired ArcelorMittal USA which included 7500 employees in the region and two of the Region’s cornerstone steel production sites at Indiana Harbor and Burns Harbor. The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana and Premier Partner Strack & Van Til announced the results of the 2020 Checkout Challenge.  Through a unified effort of 20 stores and cashiers, Strack & Van Til customers raised a record-breaking $232,306.56 to benefit food insecure individuals and families in the Region. Near the end of 2020, local Civic Leaders, Tom Sourlis & Sue Eleuterio issued a holiday challenge to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, offering to match all donations up to $100,000 through December 31st. “Tom & Sue wanted to directly address the rising demand for food assistance in the Region, while also inspiring others to do the same, through the Half Million Meal Match”, said Victor A. One month ago, the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana was issued a challenge, inspired by the generosity of Civic Leaders, Tom Sourlis and Sue Eleuterio. Charged to raise matching funds of $125,000, the Food Bank reached out to YOU, our NW Indiana community for help. Knowing the impact that these funds would have on our struggling neighbors during this critical time, YOU responded to help us far exceed the goal. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Governor Eric Holcomb has deployed the Indiana National Guard to help six food banks address the growing need for food assistance. “The food banks are in Marion County (2), Bloomington, Lafayette, Fort Wayne & Merrillville.
